Step 1: Measure Your Landscape Area
The first step is to measure the length and width of the area you plan to mulch. For square or rectangular beds, multiply the length by the width to get the total square footage.
- Example: A bed that is 10 feet long and 6 feet wide = 60 square feet.
For circular beds, measure the radius (half the diameter) and use this formula:
- Area = 3.14 × radius²
- Example: A circle with a 4-foot radius = 3.14 × 16 = 50.24 square feet.
If your beds have irregular shapes, break them down into smaller sections, calculate each, and add them together.
Step 2: Decide on Mulch Depth
The depth of mulch you apply depends on your goals and the type of mulch you’re using.
- 2 inches: Best for decorative mulch in low-maintenance areas.
- 3 inches: Ideal for most flower beds and landscaping.
- 4 inches: Recommended for weed-prone areas or sandy soils (common in Florida).
Keep in mind: applying mulch too thickly can suffocate plant roots, while too thin a layer won’t provide enough protection.
Step 3: Use the Mulch Calculation Formula
Now that you have your area (in square feet) and desired depth (in inches), you can calculate how much mulch you’ll need.
Formula:
Square footage × mulch depth ÷ 324 = cubic yards of mulch
Why 324? Because 1 cubic yard of mulch covers 324 square feet at 1 inch deep.
Example:
- Bed size: 60 square feet
- Desired depth: 3 inches
- 60 × 3 ÷ 324 = 0.55 cubic yards
That means you’ll need just over half a cubic yard of mulch.
Step 4: Convert to Bags or Bulk
Mulch is typically sold either in bags or by the cubic yard (bulk).
- One cubic yard = 27 cubic feet.
- Most bags of mulch are either 2 cubic feet or 3 cubic feet.
To figure out how many bags you’ll need:
- Multiply the number of cubic yards by 27 (to get cubic feet).
- Divide that number by the bag size.
Example:
0.55 cubic yards × 27 = 14.85 cubic feet
If using 3-cubic-foot bags → 14.85 ÷ 3 = 5 bags of mulch.
Step 5: Plan for a Little Extra
It’s always smart to order slightly more mulch than your calculation shows. Uneven ground, settling, and irregular bed shapes can require extra material. A good rule of thumb is to add 5–10% more than your calculation.
